Today's video covers how to wire and program 2-wire and 4-wire smoke detectors into the IQ Pro system. We're using System Sensors i3 smoke detectors in the video since those are what we offer on our site, but the wiring and programming will be very similar for any wired 12V smoke out there. The IQ Pro uses a similar design to DSC systems, so powering smoke detectors is handled using a PGM, or programmable output. This provides the resetable power required to operate smoke detectors properly. It is important to know the difference between 2 and 4 wire smokes when installing them because they are handled very differently. 2-wire smokes will always connect to a specific set of terminals on any system. On the IQ Pro this is PGM2, and all 2-wire smokes have to be chained from one to the next. This means with 2-wire smokes you will not have separate zones for each smoke or for certain areas of the home, but it also means less work for installation. 4-wire smokes, on the other hand, pull their power from PGM2 just as the 2-wire models do, but they also connect to a zone terminal on the system. This opens up the potential to separate out your smoke detectors into individual sensors, or multiple chains for different floors of the home. This also means you have more control over what you see on your keypads when you have a fire trouble or alarm because zones can be named to identify the location of the sensor(s) that was triggered. Keep in mind this video does not take into account any local coding requirements you may need to meet in your area. Before installing smoke detectors on the IQ Pro, or any alarm system, be sure to check your city's local code and follow their guidelines.
