The Rema (Orach Chaim 56:1) writes that one should stand when responding to Kaddish. This is learned from the verse (Judges 3:21), where when Ehud told the king of Moab that he had “a message from the Lord,” the king stood up (as brought in the Jerusalem Talmud, although this particular sugya is not found in our versions of the Yerushalmi). But Rav Shlomo Kluger (Shenot Chaim, §81) suggests that this custom may be learned from our parsha, where Bilaam says to Balak on behalf of God (Numbers 23:18): “Arise, Balak, and hear; give ear to me, son of Tzippor.”
