If you haven’t bought the helical head for your planer, the brand name “Shelix®” is well-known and respected. The name itself alludes to the fact the cutter SHEars the stock using a heLIX design. The teeth/cutters are set in a spiraled fashion, with spaces between them. This is called a segmented head. Each helix-shaped row of cutters is followed by another row that alternates in its segmentation pattern so that those cutters cut the wood that wasn’t in the preceding row. This provides a very clean-cutting action.

DeWalt® offers the highly popular DW735 13” (33cm) compact planer, and Bryd Tools® has set the standard for the aftermarket installation of helical heads. Others are attempting to match what they are doing, but from what we’ve seen, their quality and durability haven’t been attained by others, including overseas “knock-off” tools.

We bought a Shelix head and have been very happy with it. We installed the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) full-diameter version. The smaller diameter model requires less machine dismantling to insert and mount the head.

You can buy the DW735 directly from https://byrdtoolexperts.com/DIRTFARME... with the Shelix® head already installed and calibrated. This saves time and allows you to use the tool immediately.

There are trade-offs, though. You can buy a basic DeWalt® DW735 for about $600 (the basic model doesn’t have a stand or infeed and outfeed tables). At the time of this episode's filming, you can buy the Byrd Shelix® helical head for $555. Add those two, and you get $1155. Byrd Tools® offers the basic machine with the head installed and calibrated for $1695. That is a $540 difference.

So, what do you get for that $540? A professional installation, for one. A tool that is ready to go to work immediately is another plus. The tool is calibrated correctly to the readout gauge and the depth turret. This means less hassle and more productivity for you.

On the other hand, if you do the installation like we did, you end up with less cash invested, and you become very familiar with the workings and construction of your machine. After removing the factory head and installing the Shelix® head, I’m very comfortable knowing how the machine works, how to service it, and how to keep it in calibration.

You should be aware that when the factory head is removed, the DeWalt® warranty is voided. I’m not worried about it, though. The machine is well-made and has delivered dependable service in many shops, under varying conditions, for many years. Whether you install the head or have Byrd Tools® do that, a careful installation won’t damage the machine.

This is a lifetime investment, with replaceable and repositionable cutters. You can get 4 uses out of each of the 40 cutters. This allows you to rotate a section if a nick occurs, and the knives are relatively inexpensive, currently about $4 each (in a pack of 10).
