In today’s video we get to meet Dr. Pooja Kanumuru, consultant dermatologist at the Venkat Center for Aesthetic Health at Banashankari in Bengaluru. The aim of the video is to introduce acne scars and modern treatment options available to treat acne scars. Dr. Pooja also tells us about other supplementary treatments in addition to lasers to treat and heal acne scars for more radiant and healthy-looking skin.
The first step in understanding acne scars is to understand their appearance. Dr. Pooja states that acne scars appear. There are scars and there is also pigmentation. This is because acne heals and there are either scars or pigmentation as a result of the acne. Moving on to the type of scars, there are three types of scars. Ice-pick scars, box scars and rolling scars. With regard to pigmentation, acne heals resulting in black or red hyperpigmentation.
Dr. Pooja then explains modern treatment options for acne scars starting by explaining the use of Fractional CO2 laser. The second option is to use the Erbium YAG laser. The last type of treatment option is what is known as MNRF or a Micro-Needling Radio Frequency device. All these types of treatment options work on the principle of creating micro-injuries, which helps in collagen remodelling, tightening the skin and reducing the depth of the acne scars.
Dr. Pooja then speaks about the supplementary treatment options that are done along with laser treatments. She starts with TCA Cross, or the tri-chloroacetic acid cross, an option to treat ice-pick scars. The next option is microneedling with a dermaroller, a method similar to MNRF, but without the use of heat energy. The last method is called subsicion, in which fibres holding down the skin are broken down using a needle, resulting in improving the scar.
Other methods as stated by Dr. Pooja in treating acne scars are chemical peels helping in reducing pigmentation, PRP, or platelet rich plasma, dermal fillers such as PRF, or platelet rich fibrin, treatments that are aimed at lifting atrophic scars.
Before the video concludes Dr. Pooja addresses the vital aspect of the right type of treatment option for acne scars. She mentions that only a dermatologist will able to device an effective treatment plan as treating acne scars may involve a multi-modular approach.
Dr. Pooja concludes by saying that, “Patience is key!” when it comes to treating acne scars, as it may take anywhere between six to twelve months for the best results.
