Lao Duang Duean is in 2-fold meter, composed by HRH Prince Benbadhanabongse in 1923. Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra plays the version orchestrated by Lt. Col. Prateep Suphanrojn. It originates from an inspiration of a visitation to the northern territories by cart. The composer also was impressed also by "Lao Dumnoen Sai" song, which was composed ny Phraya Prasarn Duryyasap (Plaek Prasarnsap). On his visitation to the North he met Princess Chomchuen, daughter of Chao Ratchasamphanthawong and Princess Khamyon, Lord of the Northern Part. He fell in love with the Princess but was not allowed to merry her. From his disappontment and grief, he composed the song "Lao Damnoen Kwian" to preserve the memory of his beloved Princess. Later this song was called among musicians and audience as "Lao Duang Duean" from its lyric which begin with the word "Duengduean".
