originally from texas but settling in berkeley mid-fifties....she later lived in italy for several years and recording two singles....back in berkeley and appearing on a local radio show on 'KPFA' the midnight special which broadcast a live folk show every week she met and befriended another singer anne bredon who song 'babe i'm gonna leave you' took her ear and who kindly showed her the chords and lyrics which she then promptly played in her own performances...it was while at a show at oberlin college that joan baez heard smith play the song and asked her to send along its details...baez then began incorporating into her shows....then led zeppelin after hearing it recorded it on their debut album but never gave a credit to bredon!!! it was later rectified for a box set....information on smith is hard to find but she appears on a '65 album of folk music 'out west -berkeley' arhoolie records along with pete berg/toni brown(later in joy of cooking)/t.a.talbot/perry lederman and others...wether she was part of the burgeoning colby street enclave of folk musicians centering around 'dr.humbeads new tranquillity string band and medicine show/the golden toad/fat city/the diesel ducks/yreka bakery etc i haven't been able to verify (info required..) she was playing plenty of gigs and so in '68 got the chance to record an album 'the unicorn and other songs both old and new' takoma records... i've taken the title track for upload here which features whimsical - magical and surreal lyrics conjuring up a fantasy world...recorded at 'sierra sound' in berkeley accompanied by bob wilson on guitar who i understand was maybe related to her? she is sister to another folk-singer mayne smith...wilson would later appear on a papa john creach album in '71 playing on the track 'st.louis blues'...later in life smith started a record label in berkeley releasing folk-oriented albums 'bello roma music' which she runs to this day...she did help the stunning acoustic guitarist steve mann get back on his feet after a complete mental breakdown that saw him not recording or playing for over 25yrs...hot tuna have a song dedicated to him 'mann's fate'.... corrections and additions always needed....
