Today we're going to go through the K1 visa process checklist, step by step.

This is the process we went through in 2019 and are still going through in 2020.

Step 1 - File your petition.
The petitioner files the completed I-129F petition package along with a check to the $535.

Step 2 - The Notice of Action 1 also known as the NOA1
Three to four week after filing your completed petition, you will receive a NOA1. Meaning the USCIS has received your petition.

Step 3. The Notice of Action 2 also known as the NOA2
Anywhere between 5 and 7 months after sending your petition to the USCIS, you will receive a NOA2. This will detail whether your petition has been approved, denied or requests additional evidence for your petition. If you are denied you can appeal, if approved you do nothing and if you receive an RFE (request for evidence) you respond with the requested evidence.

Step 4. The NVC Phase
The service center forwards your petition to the State Department’s National Visa Center. This will happen within two to three weeks of your approval. At this stage a security check is run on your fiancé, again at this stage you do nothing. Should you have any questions at this stage contact the Visa Center at the following number (603) 334-0700. Customer Service Representatives are available Monday to Friday 7:00 am to 12:00 midnight EST, excluding holidays.

Step 5. NVC to Local Embassy
Once the security check comes back clean, your K1 visa petition is sent to the Bureau of Consular Affairs where it will then be sent to the US embassy in your fiancé's country.

Step 6. Embassy Letter (K1 Visa Packet)
After receiving your k1 visa petition, the US embassy in your fiancé's home country will send instructions (K1 visa packet) for the medical exam and interview.

Step 7. Gather Embassy Documents
The US embassy will instruct the fiancé to return certain documents immediately. The rest will be kept until the interview.

Step 8. The Medical Exam
Attend the medical exam. There is a fee for the medical which can be paid by the petitioner or beneficiary, check medical fees with the approved medical professional.

Step 9. The Embassy Interview

The beneficiary must attend the embassy interview. The list of documents required will be listed in the K1 visa packet sent by the embassy to the beneficiary. The fee of $265 must be paid to the embassy either on the day or prior to the interview. If you applied for the K2, children of the beneficiary must attend the interview. The petitioner does not need to attend the interview but is encouraged to attend if possible.

Step 10. The Visa is Issued
Depending on the embassy you may receive your K1 visa the same day but it usually takes around 1 week to receive the K1 visa.

Step 11. Travel to US
Once Approved you have 6 months to travel to the US. You will receive a large sealed envelope or package of documents to hand over when you arrive at your Port of Entry. Do not open the sealed package!

Step 12. The Wedding
You must be married within 90 days of arrival in the US. The 90 days starts on the date you enter the US. To be married within 90 days means to be legally married in a courthouse.
