Michael Lawrence Tyler grew up in New Orleans' 12th Ward, the wedge shaped division where legendary music venue Tipitina's is located, Ignatius J. Reilly lived in A Confederacy of Dunces, and many Mardi Gras parades pass through. He joined the Army as a combat engineer and then opened for Run-DMC and Doug E. Fresh at a concert in Treme, and was signed by Big Boy Records. Under the name Mystikal, he then signed to Master P's No Limit and released the successful Let's Get Ready, with the hits "Danger (Been So Long)" and "Shake Ya Ass". 2001's Tarantula swerved a bit toward jazz and swing as well as hip-hop and features my favorite song of his, "Bouncin' Back (Bumpin' Me Against The Wall)", which sees Mystikal's staccato barking drawl over a jazz-influenced hook reminiscent of OutKast's Idlewild soundtrack. Unfortunately, in 2004, Mystikal was sentenced to six years in state prison for sexual battery and extortion of his hairstylist. While in jail, he was convicted in federal court for failure to file tax returns. In 2012, Mystikal was arrested again for domestic abuse battery, and then turned himself in in 2017 for rape and domestic abuse. He has been held without bond in Ascension Parish since 2022 and if convicted, he will face a mandatory life sentence. I didn't know any of this stuff when I recorded this song. I just found out when I did the background research. In my mind, Mystikal was a crude, hooky rapper with an explosive delivery and an incredibly quick flow. I've enjoyed his songs in many action movies, first among them Jet Li and Bridget Fonda's superb 2001 flick Kiss of the Dragon. But, he's recorded, and I'm going to post. A lot of folks were involved in making his songs hits (including Pharrell Williams), and we should be able to appreciate the art if not the artist.
