14th Asia Pacific Hospice Conference: Building Bridges – Hospice Palliative Care Beyond Borders
13 -14 November 2021
Online Conference

Plenary Session 5 “HINOHARA memorial lecture”
Speaker: Rosalie Shaw (Australia)
Chairs: Dr Akitoshi Hayashi (Japan), Dr Cynthia Goh (Singapore)

Dr Rosalie Shaw shares about Dr Shigeaki Hinohara (Patron and benefactor of APHN until 2017) as a person, about his values and his role in the establishment of APHN. Dr Shaw first met Dr Hinohara when he visited the Palliative Care Unit at Hollywood Hospital and Cottage Hospice, a free-standing inpatient unit in Perth. Impressed by the Cottage Hospice, Dr Hinohara invited the architect, Mr Ian Watson, to design a replica of the Cottage Hospice for a hospice in Kanagawa, The Peace House Hospice. It opened in 1993. Recognising that there were pockets of interest about palliative care in many centres in Asia, Dr Hinohara’s vision was for these pioneers to meet and share ideas and resources. This was how APHN came about. While travelling to different countries to teach about palliative care, Dr Shaw strongly believed in developing relationships and enhancing communication. APHN has come a long way since it was first established. Today, APHN comprises 2030 individual members from 42 regions and 260 organisational members from 18 regions and the network continues to concentrate on aiding development of palliative care in the Asia Pacific region. Dr Shaw vividly remembers Dr Hinohara’s words “It is my important mission to pass down the preciousness of life and of peace to future generations” and she concludes her presentation with the quote “Palliative care is not just about dying and suffering. It is about enabling our patients and families to live as fully as possible in those last months, weeks and days, so that they too can experience the preciousness of life.”
