I am Sandra Oudkirk, Director of the American Institute in Taiwan, and this is a message I’d like to share with my friends in Taiwan before I leave.
Taiwan is where my life as a diplomat began. Looking back on the progress of the past thirty years, I am filled with immense pride, both for the remarkable achievements that Taiwan has made and for the closer bonds between the United States and Taiwan that we have worked hard to forge. Over the past three years, we have made great strides together in trade, people-to-people relations, and defense cooperation. They bring us together, not just as individuals but as societies, in enduring partnership. I have also deeply experienced Taiwan’s culture and beautiful scenery. Here, I have witnessed Taiwan’s amazing accomplishments and the close connections between the United States and Taiwan. Once again, I’d like to say that serving as the AIT Director has been really a professional dream come true for me. It has been an honor to represent the people of the United States here in Taiwan.

I will be forever changed for the better by my time here, the friendships I have made, and the kindness and warmth of the Taiwanese people. As I prepare to depart, I am convinced to the core of my being that the future is bright for the United States and Taiwan, and we will continue to do great things together.
