The two-bedroom houses that chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao promised for the poor is no longer coming free of cost. Unable to implement the CM's pet project even seven months after it was announced, the cash-strapped government is now actively considering charging beneficiaries a part of the cost component of the houses.

While the government is estimating the cost of a house at Rs 4.5 lakh, a beneficiary may have to pay at least Rs 1 lakh towards construction of the house, according to highly placed government sources. "Initial estimation was Rs 3.5 lakh to build a house. However, with the prices of construction materials going up, the cost has to be re-estimated and the beneficiary has to contribute his part," housing minister A Indrakaran Reddy,
