Here I present a series of photographs on the great Volga River city of Volgograd.
The original settlement dates from around the mid 16th century and documentary evidence of the town, then called Tsaritsyn, the name it bore from 1589-1925.....
The city was renamed Stalingrad after Joseph Stalin on April 10, 1925. This was officially to recognise the city's and Stalin's role in its defence against the Whites between 1918 and 1920.
Stalingrad was completely destroyed during the Great patriotic War and little reaains today of its historic past. In 1961, once again the name of the city was changed to Volgograd as part of a programme of de-Stalinisation following Stalin's death...

The photographs show a fine city that was built after the world, together with the astonishing monument on Mamayev Kurgan to the fallen soldiers who defended the city during the war......
