Castlevania , known in Japan as Akumajō Dracula ( Dracula's Demon Castle ), is an action - platform video game developed and published byKonami for the Famicom Disk System on September 26, 1986. It was ported to cartridge for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and released in North America in May 1987 and in Europe in December 1988. It is the first title in the Castlevania series .
Players control Simon Belmont, a descendant of a legendary group of vampire hunters , who enters Count Dracula 's castle to destroy him when he suddenly reappears 100 years after his ancestor defeated him. It was developed in parallel with Vampire Killer , released a month later for MSX2 .
Castlevania utilizes platform gameplay and is divided into six blocks of three stages each, totaling 18 stages. Simon Belmont can move, jump, crouch, climb ladders, and use a magic whip (known in the series as the "Vampire Killer") as his main weapon. When the player presses the button to use the whip, there is a slight delay before Simon does so. The player starts the game with four lives and five hearts and must complete the current stage block before time runs out. Simon has a life bar, which decreases whenever he is hit by an enemy or projectile. A life is lost if the bar or time reaches zero, if Simon falls from the bottom of the screen, or is hit by a ceiling with moving spikes. Hidden food items restore health, and extra lives are gained at certain scores. The player faces a boss, usually inspired by a classic monster from horror films , mythology , and Gothic literature , such as Medusa , Frankenstein's Monster , or the personification of Death itself , at the end of each block, and must win the battle and collect a red orb that restores all health before time runs out to advance. The ultimate goal is to defeat Count Dracula himself and his curse at the end of Stage 18, causing Dracula's castle to collapse and allowing the player to restart the game with a higher difficulty.
Throughout the game, the player can find and use various secondary weapons, including throwing knives, axes, holy water bottles that function as fire grenades – producing flames upon impact, a magic clock that can briefly freeze enemies, and holy crosses that function as boomerangs . However, only one of these weapons can be carried at a time; if the player picks up a new one or loses a life, the weapon is automatically lost. Secondary weapons require hearts to be used, which can be found by destroying candelabras or defeating enemies with the whip. Other hidden items include point bonuses (money bags, crowns, chests), temporary invincibility (golden jar), improvements to the length and power of the whip (metal chain), instant destruction of all enemies on screen ( blue rosary ), and double or triple use of any secondary weapon by collecting a "multiplier".
When all lives are lost, the player has the option to continue from the beginning of the block or return to the title screen.
