A Big Bold Beautiful Beautiful Journey Movie Review by Sucharita Tyagi - At first I really liked this film, then I hate it, then eventually I liked it again. This is a great roller coaster to be on because I WELCOME a movie that messes with my brain a bit.
Kogonada’s A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is might trick you into believeing that it is a romantic comedy involving a bit of magic realism and perhaps tiemn travel, if you’ve seen the trailers. In actuality, it unfolds like an experiment where a scientist is making up rules as they go along.
If I may hazard a guess, at the point director Kogonada invites you to start actively drawing from the film. Are these actors in a cheesy movie, are these two people in a marriage/long term relationship, is this road trip really occurring, are these patients in a hospital imagining everything, is this purgatory? Because of the lack of afore mentioned rules, the filmmaker leaves crumbs and clues for thew film to turn into any of the above, or something else entirely. This is high concept story-telling, and unless you’re very very patient with it, it is right here where it might lose you entirely.
Another famous “journey” when one talks about filmmaking is “the hero’s journey”, poularised by writer Joseph Campbell. David, with whom we spend more time, follows this journey to the T, when you think about it, the film truly almost feels like a dramatisation OF the hero’s journey, complete with an “all is lost” moment, providing a catastrophe that clears the way for transformation post which the tone shifts again and regret, healing and remorse emerge as the clearer themes. David and Sara’s scars are laid bare now for the viewer to feel empathy with- a parent you wish you had more time with, realising you’ve spent your whole life eaither becoming the shadow of your parent or the parent you wish you had as a kid. In its most touching and affecting final moments, Kogonada seems to drop armor and finally allow you to enter without trepidation, finally at peace with the idiosyncratic narrative. Perhaps however, taking too long to get there.
