On visiting London in 1996, high on my list of things to see was The Museum of the Moving Image (MOMI) that opened in 1988. I had seen the colorful spread in Time magazine of the design and collection of the museum whose mission was to chronicle the history of cinema technology and media. It was located below Waterloo Bridge as part of the cultural complex on the South Bank of the River Thames. We had nothing comparable to this in the USA until The Academy Museum opened in LA in 2021, however the Academy Museum is more about diversity in film and political correctness.

The Museum was an amazing place with a terrific collection of movie memorabilia and the machines and tech that made them possible. A highlight was The Temple to the Gods of the Silent Cinema, a Greek temple constructed with pillars sculpted to represent the great stars of the silent screen. I feel blessed to have worshiped at this temple of the silent art.

Operated by the British Film Institute, MOMI was closed in 1999 supposedly temporary basis. Its permanent closure was announced in 2002. I feel lucky to have visited this great collection and hope you can get an idea of how well designed and exciting its collection was for the classic film fan. Maybe the younger generation just stopped caring about the history of film and that's why it closed. A real loss.
