Laxapana Waterfall – A Hidden Gem in Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands

Nestled deep in the heart of Sri Lanka’s central highlands, Laxapana Waterfall is a magnificent natural wonder that promises a refreshing escape into nature. About the Waterfall
Laxapana Waterfall is one of Sri Lanka’s tallest and most captivating waterfalls, standing at approximately 129 meters (423 feet). It is fed by the Maskeliya Oya, a tributary of the Kelani River, and is located at an elevation of 660 meters above sea level in the Ambagamuwa Korale of Nuwara Eliya District, near Ginigathhena.

The name “Laxapana” is believed to be derived either from the Sinhala term for "a hundred thousand lamps" or from “laksha” (iron ore), referencing the iron-rich rocks over which the water flows. The waterfall has also been known historically as “Movini Ella”, as mentioned by Dr. Kautzsch.

Cultural and Historical Significance
According to local legend, this site is linked to Sri Lanka’s hydro-power development, notably the Wimalasurendra power station. The surrounding Laxapana Reservoir plays a key role in powering nearby hydroelectric plants including New Laxapana, Canyon, and Polpitiya Samanala, though this sometimes results in reduced water flow over the falls.



Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit Laxapana Falls is between June and September, when water levels are typically high and the surrounding scenery is lush and green. However, the waterfall is accessible all year round.

How to Get There
From Hatton:
Take the Hatton–Maskeliya road for approximately 18 km.
A footpath past Pathana village leads down to the base of the waterfall.

Alternative Route:
From the Kaluganga River Junction, take the Laxapana road for 14 km until you reach the Laxapana Temple.The waterfall is about 2.5 km from the temple.

Top View Access:
From the Maskeliya road, look for a small by-road about 500 meters away.
Travel 2.3 km by vehicle, then walk 100 meters down to reach the top of the falls.

0 Mile Post at Double Cutting on Norton – Maskeliya Road (නොර්ටන් මස්කෙළිය මාර්ගයේ 0 සැතපුම් කනුව)

Just 3 km from Norton Bridge on the road toward Lakshapana Falls, you’ll come across a small but notable junction called Double Cutting. From here, one road leads to Lakshapana town, and the other heads toward Lakshapana Falls.
At the top of the road to Lakshapana town stands a rare landmark: Sri Lanka’s only "0 Mile Post." While its exact purpose remains unclear, it's believed to mark the starting point for measuring road distances—possibly set by early road engineers.

Folklore & Geographic Curiosity
According to local folklore, this Zero Mile Post is located at the geographic center of Sri Lanka. The legend claims that if you draw an imaginary vertical line from Point Pedro (northern tip) to Dondra Head (southern tip), and a horizontal line from Colombo to Sangaman Kanda (eastern tip), the two lines intersect right at this point.
Modern mapping tools, however, show that while this exact spot isn't the precise center of the island, the north-south line does pass quite close to it—making the claim partly true.

Why Visit?
Though modest in appearance, the Zero Mile Post has become a quirky and interesting stop for travelers exploring the Norton Bridge–Maskeliya region, especially those en route to waterfalls like Lakshapana or Aberdeen Falls.
It's a great photo opportunity and a curious piece of road history tucked away in Sri Lanka's hill country
