The Challenge

Following ACLR, significant muscle atrophy and strength loss occur, not just in the quadriceps, but also in the calf muscles (gastrocnemius and soleus) due to disuse. Neglecting calf strength will prevent a full return to pre-injury performance.

The Exercise Focus

This specific exercise is designed to help the athlete relearn proper knee positioning and is critical for dynamic knee stabilization. It focuses on achieving and maintaining full knee extension (0°) while actively preventing hyperextension, a common challenge in early rehab.

Maximizing Results with BFR

To maximize muscle gains while protecting the recent graft repair, the athlete is using Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) bands. BFR allows for high volume (3 sets of 30 reps) work with very light resistance. This strategy facilitates an anabolic environment (muscle growth) without placing excessive stress or torque on the healing ACL and knee joint.

Goal: Restore muscle mass and strength for a full return to sport. Learn how to incorporate BFR training safely into your early ACL rehabilitation!

Always consult your physician before beginning any exercise program. STOP exercising if you experience any symptoms of weakness, unsteadiness, light-headedness/dizziness, chest pain or pressure, nausea, or shortness of breath.

Performing these exercises should not cause pain. If you experience pain while exercising, decrease the speed of your movement. If the pain persists - STOP. Mild soreness after exercising may be experienced after beginning a new exercise.
