Regulars will know how much of a fan I am of PastFX in Australia - and in recent years, Verlie has been on a mission to bring a huge number of old pedals back to life, whilst adding a huge amount of modern day functionality to the original design. I’ve tried out a fair few PastFX pedals now, and each of them has been beyond wonderful.

So you can imagine how excited I was to have Verlie’s Electro-Harmonix Small Clone…err, clone(!) land on my doorstep! I’m a big chorus lover, so checking out this pedal - the Kurt’s Cologne, based on one of my all-time favourites, and also running on an MN3007 chip just like the OG - was right up my street.

Building on the original concept, you now get 8 positions of Depth - rather than just two - so you can really dial in the right amount of wobble for you. The 70/80/90’s switch gives you extra control over the depth + some subtle EQ shaping; the Mix knob lets you dial down how intense the effect is compared to your dry signal; the Hi & Low cut buttons (whilst subtle) shelve off problematic frequencies, especially when running the pedal into a gain stage; and the Level control lets you compensate for the slight level drop inherent in that circuit.

But that’s not all! This pedal also gives stereo outputs - so you can run it into two amps for a huge spacial chorus effect should you wish to.

Today, I’ll put the Curt’s Cologne through its paces. But in addition to that, I just so happen to have a 1983 Small Clone in my pedal collection, so I’ll be seeing just how close we can get the two pedals to sound. Could the PastFX get so close to the OG as to render it redundant?! Let’s find out!
