The dialogue between Romolo Del Deo and Dmitry Yusov is a view of patronage from the point of view of the creator. Starting from the colossal figure of Sergei Diaghilev, we discuss the fate of his collaborators and colleagues, try to understand what patronage is and what impact it has on artists. We compare Diaghilev's role in the work of many of the great artists of the XX century with how other famous patrons influenced their "wards". Enlightened patronage can change the art of an entire era: for example, most Renaissance princes and dukes have long been forgotten, but the Medici is imprinted in our minds forever because of their impact on the arts.
Diaghilev died in poverty, but for all of us who came after him, we live in the world he created.
