The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry is probing claims on the existence of rice cartels in the country.

The claims were first raised by Umno Youth chief Dr Mohd Akmal Saleh. In response, Acting Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali says the ministry is treating the allegations seriously.

He adds that he has directed the Malaysia Competition Commission, as well as the ministry's enforcement unit, to contact Akmal to get more information and evidence.

On Monday, Akmal had claimed that rice cartels were selling local rice at an inflated price.

He alleges that the cartels are selling locally-produced rice at RM3.40 per kg instead of the RM2.60 controlled price by tampering with invoices.
