Volkswagen Atlas Rear Differential Service DIY (2018-2021 VW Atlas, MQB Platform, 3.6 VR6)

►Unfairly forgotten about in most drivelines, the differential converts the engine's twisting force into forward movement. Inside is a set of gears and a whole lot of gear fluid formulated to keep everything cool and lubricated. But, like any other fluid within the drivetrain, it will need replacing.

Differential gear fluid is relatively maintenance-free, with a service interval typically between 40,000 and 60,000 miles. Within that range, its friction modifiers lose effectiveness, rapidly increasing wear on the rotating metal parts within. All it takes to ensure your ring and pinion stay healthy is some fresh fluid on time, so don't forget about it.
