🎙️ Good morning Instrumentation Engineers!
This one’s not just a technical tip — it’s about Engineering Management, and every Design Lead or Engineering Manager needs to hear this.

I’ve seen it too often in my 30+ years — teams walking into a HAZOP unprepared, with half-reviewed Alarm & Trip Lists or Cause & Effect (C&E) Diagrams.

If you’re an engineering manager or lead, listen closely 👇

When you go for HAZOP:
✅ Cause & Effect diagrams and Alarm & Trip Lists must be reviewed at least twice before the session — up to “Issued for Approval” stage.
✅ Every comment, revision, and validation must be done and dusted.
Because HAZOP checks back every alarm, interlock, and maintenance override directly against these two documents.

If they’re incomplete:
🚫 HAZOP becomes partial.
🚫 SIL Study after that becomes flawed.
🚫 You compromise plant safety and insurance integrity.

And here’s where things go wrong — Engineering Managers often get pressured by project control schedules rather than document quality.
That’s not engineering management — that’s project administration wearing a hard hat.

When Operations, PMC, and EPC all sit around the HAZOP table, the Chairman will ask one question:
👉 “Where are the documents?”

If the Alarm & Trip List is missing or the C&E Diagram is half-baked, the session loses credibility. And then, schedule panic sets in, making SIL studies rushed and incomplete.

So next time — prepare your deliverables early.
Get that Alarm & Trip List and C&E Diagram reviewed, approved, and ready.
That’s what defines strong Engineering Management — not just meeting deadlines, but ensuring technical integrity before HAZOP.
