We can always learn from others in all situations. As children we learn from our parents, as sibling we learn from our brothers and sisters, as a doctors we learn from our patients, we learn from employees, friends, and perfect strangers.
Sometimes we get so drawn into thinking in our own perspective and we often shut out other ways of thinking. Patients often relay new emotional, cognitive information about how their condition affects them and how they can feel judged by others/authorities. An example of this is when motor vehicle accident insurance examiners are trying to quantify their degree of disability by physical testing that people can give up or push through, or a patient suffering through a concussion and their family does not understand why it is taking so long to recover when they look normal. Patients have different will powers and perseverance to get through testing and some give up after small changes in symptoms increase and some push through until test is completed (often prior athletes). Some people can perform with with an exorbitant amount of pain and others have to stop. Some cry and some hold it in. we realize people’s past experiences, personality and motivations when we are judging or evaluating each other.
Sometimes the best things we can do to grow as a person and be more knowledgeable is to listen and give empathy to others, take the time to be present and focussed as this will often drive new insights about the people similar to them or with their condition, how they see the world and function through their life. Opening yourself up to another perspective will open new doors and new learning.
