Actress and novelist Joan Collins on motherhood and why she never does housework.

Best known for her role as Alexis in the US soap opera ‘Dynasty’, British actress Joan Collins has also found success as a writer with her first novel ‘Prime Time’.

Due to illness, Joan Collins is unable to travel to Dublin to appear on ‘The Late Late Show’. Instead, presenter Gay Byrne goes to the fashionable London neighborhood of Chelsea to meet her at the Draycott Hotel near Sloane Square.

Joan Collins has three children Tara Newley, Alexander Newley and Katy Kass. The youngest Katy is 16 years old and attends school in England, so Joan Collins is keen to spend as much time as possible with her daughter.

Joan Collins is concerned about her children without worrying obsessively about them. She does not let any of her children walk about London at night or in certain areas during the day. She is aware of her position of privilege which means her children take taxis home at night.

Joan Collins is not somebody who spends a second of her time shopping for groceries or carrying out housework.

I didn’t do it when I was 16 years old because I didn’t like it, I do not like housework, I’ve never liked it and never will like it.

She is not responsible for cooking for her children as they are all well able to cook for themselves.

This episode of ‘The Late Late Show’ was broadcast on 14 October 1988. The presenter is Gay Byrne.
