As you are all aware, a full tuning demo was released this past Friday of this Focus Series snare drum.

To date, this is the most unique snare drum I have been able to demo.

What makes this snare drum so unique is the build of the stave shell.

The Focus Series 14 x 6 stave Maple shell starts 1.5" thick and is then milled using proprietary CNC technology to create this shell.

Doc Sweeney states:

“The Focus Series (FS) design is based, in part, on Slingerland's Tone Flange snare of the 1930s.

Whereas the Tone Flange uses a detachable metal flange to reduce the internal diameter of the shell (a holdover for their days as a banjo maker), we have created a one-piece Maple shell that reduces the internal diameter just below the batter head to 11".

In doing so, it directs energy to the center of the snare side head, creating a sensitive, highly articulate snare. The extra mass on the batter side gives the snare plenty of crack.”

This particular snare drum is the first 0.5” shell wall thickness in this model and has 16 vents built into the shell.

From my experience over the past few days, this build focuses on the tone, sustain, and resonance of the snare drum.

This drum may be direct but doesn’t lose any sensitivity or articulation.

This sound is fascinating and much different than any sound I currently have in my arsenal. Stay tuned for more.
