Easy meat substitute | Vegan deli meat slices with only 5 ingredients | Deli meat slices made from tofu | Easy 5 ingredient vegan meat substitute | Oil free recipe

In this video, I show you how to make vegan deli meat slices using tofu sheets. It tastes meaty, chewy but tender, and full of flavor, so close to the real deli meat in both texture and flavor. It’s definitely an amazing meat substitute for sandwiches, lunch wraps, or you can even toss it in your pasta or salad, etc. Without seeing the muslin patterns, you won’t believe that you are just having a slice of tofu, especially in sandwiches types of foods. What’s more important is: It’s not over processed, oil free, so much healthier! Plus, this recipe is amazingly easy and cheap to make. No fancy cooking tools or skills required, only 5 ingredients needed in total.

►Serving size: 20 tofu deli slices

►Ingredients:
1. 250g Tofu sheets
2. 2 slices of raw beet root
3. 2 tbsp salt
4. 2 tbsp maple syrup
5. 1 tbsp light soy sauce

►Instructions:
Step 1.
Slice tofu sheet into smaller pieces. If you open a new package, you want to separate each layer gently before cutting it, because all the layers kind of stick together after being vacuum packaged. (The detail is shown in my previous video:Tofu side dish within 10 minutes| Vegan | Bean curd skin salad.) You can cut it into circles if you want to imitate the shape of real deli meats. But I don’t mind the shape that much, and I don’t like wasting food. So I just cut them into small rectangles according to the size of the tofu sheet I’ve got. Here it became 20 slices. Each slice is 12cm x 9cm roughly, which is a good size for cooking, storage, and adding into sandwiches stuff as well.
Step 2.
Slightly blanch them in boiling salty water for a couple of minutes to remove the excess beanie flavor. After 2 minutes, turn off the heat and drain them when you use them. Or soak them in cold water.
Step 3.
Put another clean pot on high heat, add in 600 ml water(2 and half cups roughly). Add in 2 tbsp salt, 1 tbsp light soy sauce, 2 tbsp maple syrup, and 2 slices of raw beetroot. Bring it to boil. When it’s boiling, add in the tofu sheets slices, simmer on low heat for 15-20 minutes. Give it a stir from time to time to make sure everything is well dispersed. Be gentle because the tofu slices are softer when they are hot. 15 minutes later, turn off the heat, leave the pot there, and let it cool down naturally.
Step 4.
The tofu slices now are already cooked and ready to eat. But for better presentation and flavor, I usually will keep them in a fridge at least overnight. When it cools down to room temperature, get rid of the beetroot slices. And transfer all the tofu slices into a sealable container one by one, make sure they are piled up nicely. Then pour all the rest of the liquid into the container as well. Put it in the fridge. This is also the way to store the tofu deli slices. They can last for a week in the sealed container in the fridge.
Step 5.
When you want to have them, take a few out, and dry both sides with paper towels or a tea towel. Put them in sandwiches, wraps, or chop them to small pieces and toss in your pasta or salad.
Then enjoy ;)
