Jagdgeschwader 52 (JG 52), was the most successful Luftwaffe fighter wing during World War II, with a total of more than 10,000 shootdowns of enemy aircraft. It was the unit where the first three Luftwaffe aces, Erich Hartmann, Gerhard Barkhorn and Günther Rall, served. The unit flew throughout the war with many of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 models and only with them.

JG 52 participated in the Battle of France and the Battle of Britain. Initially, this wing only consisted of 2 fighter groups, when most other fighter wings had 3 groups. The achievements made by JG 52 during these offensives were rather insignificant. By the end of 1940, the unit had accumulated 177 kills, but also suffered heavy losses, with 53 pilots killed or taken prisoners of war in the Battle of Britain alone.

JG 52 was transferred to the Eastern Front at the beginning of Operation Barbarossa, and from then on it began to consistently score kills. Between 1941 and 1944 the unit operated in the Central and Southern sectors and on the Ukrainian front in the Soviet Union, in support of Army Group South. On September 7, 1941, the unit achieved its 500th kill. Of this number of victories, 323 were achieved on the Eastern Front.
Initially, Group I./JG 52 remained in the West, guarding the coast of northern Europe, while Captain Erich Woitke's Group II./JG 52, which was attached to JG 27, claimed 270 kills in the first months of the offensive. Group III./JG 52 was the one that operated in the southernmost area of ​​the entire Russian front, along the Black Sea coast, where action was scarce at that time.
