I woke up this morning to no hot water. Interesting way I found out, the video tells the story.

Diagnosis was very simple. The pilot light was out. Generally, that shouldn't happen unless there is an interruption in gas service, which is very unlikely, or it is somehow blown out, also very unlikely. While it's possible there is some other reason the pilot went out, the most common cause is a bad thermocouple. They're not expensive, so it's not a bad idea to replace it regardless, and it might just fix your problem.

Indeed, the thermocouple had died. I had replaced the thermocouple back in 2016. Perhaps they are cheap for a reason. But they are really easy to replace, it's a very simple procedure and only requires a couple of hand tools.
