Cara’s story: Why Choose Nursing?

Cara Fazio had always wanted to become a nurse but delayed pursuing a nursing degree partly due to a lack of confidence. After being diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder, however, she thought, “Now is the time.”

Prior to enrolling in Northeastern University’s Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program in Burlington, Massachusetts, she served as an activities director at a long-term care facility.

Cara was drawn to Northeastern’s ABSN program because it was flexible and a blend of online coursework and in-person labs and clinicals that fit in with her life schedule.

She also was influenced by her admissions counselor who was approachable and made the process smooth.

While the intensive nature of the ABSN program was challenging for Cara at first, she found great support from her instructors. “It was a little intimidating because it's your first week at nursing school and you're thrown into clinicals, but I had a great clinical instructor,” she says. “She walked us through everything. I really kind of hit the ground running on the first week there. It was just a really great experience.”

Why choose nursing? For Cara, one reason is to provide the compassionate care you would want for yourself or family members.

Students with at least 62 non-nursing college credits or a non-nursing bachelor’s degree could be eligible for Northeastern’s ABSN program and earn a BSN in as few as 16 months.

If nursing school sounds overwhelming, don’t sell yourself short. “Keep pushing yourself. Keep going because you can achieve anything if people put your mind to it,” Cara says.

Northeastern offers three start dates each year at its locations near Boston, Providence, Rhode Island, and in Charlotte, North Carolina. To learn more about the Northeastern University ABSN program, contact an admissions counselor today.
