The First JC Penney Store in Kemmerer, Wyoming

We are in Kemmerer, WY at the first JCPenney store! Founded in 1902, James Cash Penney opened the mother store that grew into the mall anchor staple across the Unites States. Come along with us as we learn the store’s history and of course, shop!



Penney, originally from Missouri, moved west due to his doctor’s advice to better his health. Penney found himself in Colorado working in the dry goods business. In 1898, he started working for a business called Golden Rule. By 1899, the Golden Rule owners asked Penney if he would like to join the partnership and everything came together after that day. Penney opened the first store in a one-room building while he and his family lived in the attic upstairs. With the business gaining success, Penney moved his store to the second location down the block. The store moved to the third and final location, where you can still shop today! Come along with us as we learn the history as well as shop!

Parking: Street parking is available.

Worth a Visit: If you enjoy shopping and visiting first locations, check it out! This location houses many of Penney’s personal items from the days of starting the store. All of the workers were beyond nice and told us stories from then and now. If you shop there, your receipt says “Store No. 1” and that is super cool! The JCPenney Mother Store is located at 722 JCPenney Drive in Kemmerer, WY.
