Malaysia set to join BRICS - PM Anwar

Malaysia will soon begin formal procedures to join the BRICS coalition, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said he is working closely with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to expand the membership and is awaiting the South African government's response.

The BRICS group, formed in 2006, initially included Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining in 2011.

In August 2023, the group invited six new members, although Argentina later withdrew.

In January this year, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates formally joined BRICS.
