G6PD deficiency is strongly associated with malaria and is the most common enzyme deficiency worldwide. Testing for G6PD activity is essential for accurate diagnosis. If you live in regions with high malaria and/or G6PD prevalence, or have a family history of G6PD deficiency, favism, neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, hemolysis, hemoglobinuria or thalassemic disorder, it's especially important to get tested before taking certain medications such as primaquine, sulfamethoxazole, quinolones, dapsone, and nitrofurantoin.
