Hook by hook and loop by loop, when the crochet group at Buckner Villas gets together their creations are a labor of love. Pauline Swanberg, 83, started this project at her retirement community when her daughter told her about Operation Gratitude, a volunteer group that sends care packages to members of the military overseas.Swanberg says, I just think it's wonderful and just anything we can do for our country. The scarves they make are meant to provide comfort and warmth. Those are the same feelings shared by the elderly women who crochet them. Julia Treadway, 86, says when she is making the scarves she says a prayer for the person who will end up wearing them. I say a prayer, silently. And I wonder who will wear it? What are they going to look like?In the past year alone, more than 400 scarves have made their way across the world from Afghanistan to Iraq, and all of them were the heartfelt handiwork of these women. Many of the ladies have sons, husbands and brothers who have been to war. Crocheting these scarves is their way to say thank you to those who serve.I felt like this was something that I can do that would, you know, not be a big benefit but at least let them know we care , says Treadway. To us, they are our heroes!By Judy Maggio
