The effective rate of protection (ERP) is a measure used in economics to assess the overall impact of trade protection a particular industry or sector. It takes into account not only the direct effects of tariffs or other trade barriers on the final product, but also the impact on intermediate inputs or raw materials used in the production process.

It can be calculated using following formula:

e =( t-ar)/1-a
where e is the effective rate of protection

t is the nominal tariff on the final imported product
a is the amount of imported input used in the domestic product
r is the amount of tariff imposed on imported input
