To promote the practice and custom of classical music in Bangladesh, Bengal Foundation had organised an evening of classical music performance ‘Mayar Madhuri’, on Tuesday, 20th January 2015. The recital began with a khayal performance by Priyanka Gope followed by dhrupad sangeet by Pandit Uday Bhawalkar. Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar, accompanied by Pandit Suresh Talwalkar on the tabla, took the stage for the final performance of the evening.

Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar performed a khayal set on Raga Jogkauns (intermingling of Raga Chandrakauns and Raga Jog). Pandit Suresh Talwalkar, another guru of BPS accompanied the maestro on tabla. Clarity in sur (melody), which is pristine and precise, coupled with an introduction to a raga through showcasing authentic ragdari has become Pt. Kashalkar's signature. The maestro fascinated the packed audience with the charming touch of the musical notes -- shudh gandhar and shudh nishad. On his birthday, Pt. Kashalkar himself distributed mellifluous gifts among the audience. Both his bandish were embellished with murki, bahelawa, bolbaat, meendkhand and more. Later, the maestro performed a khayal based on Raga Sohini and a thumri set on Raga Bhairavi. Bijon Chandra Mistry on harmonium and Tasaouf Islam and Mukul Roy on tanpura accompanied the maestro.

To celebrate the 60th birthday of Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar, an eminent classical vocal maestro of the sub-continent and the Principal of Bengal Parampara Sangeetalay , Bengal Foundation arranged a classical music recital titled Mayar Madhuri at Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) Complex auditorium, Farmgate in Dhaka.

Pt Ulhas Kashalkar, the doyen of Indian classical music was born in Nagpur, Maharashtra, and took his first lessons from his father N D Kashalkar. While studying music at Nagpur University he trained under the noted gurus Rajabhau and P N Khardenavis. He is one of the few vocalists who mastered the three distinctive styles of Gwalior, Jaipur and Agra gharanas. His capacity to consolidate the intricacies of the various forms and the rare ability to switch between the three styles in the course of a single performance, lends a special dimension to his music.
