Hot Towel Shave at Barbería Raffles in Mexico City 🇲🇽

Established in 1945, Barbería Raffles is full of history and interesting stories. We heard that Fidel Castro once got a haircut at Raffles in the 1950s. Apparently, he was broke and wrote an IOU. So the story goes when Castro made international news, the original owner emptied his drawers looking for the old signed piece of paper Castro had given!

The barbershop is now owned and operated by Kevin Uriel Medina Serrano, who took over the shop from his father. Barbería Raffles was originally opened by Rafael Ayala Alvarado on April 17, 1945. Later on, it was Kevin's dad who continued Rafael’s legacy 💈✨ You can still see a photograph of Rafael hanging proudly in the shop.

Kevin says he learned barbering from his dad at a young age. When Kevin decided not to continue with his studies at school, he recalls his father telling him, “Son, I’m giving you a week to look for a job and if you don't find a job then you go with me to work.” Sure enough, a week later Kevin was accompanying his dad to the barbershop! He started out by sweeping up after the haircuts and running errands 🧹

Three years ago, the barbershop had to move from its original location to its current spot. As many of the old fixtures as possible from the original shop were incorporated into the new location.

Kevin kept the vintage tools, and you’ll also see the old towel steamer in the shop. Lots of people ask him why he doesn’t make it like modern shops by adding purple lights and things like that. Kevin’s response it that he likes keeping his barbershop as a traditional old-school place ❤️

As a barber, Kevin wants his customers to feel good. When they appreciate his work and keep coming back, Kevin says it makes him feel good too.

✨ Kevin’s life advice is: "Be happy, if your problems have a solution, then what are you worried about?”

Huge thanks to Carlos for recommending Barbería Raffles 🙏🏼 Thank you also to Edgar and Viridiana for all the behind-the-scenes assistance.
