How To Tie A Rolling Hitch Knot

The rolling hitch is a simple friction knot used to attach a rope to another rope or a rod, pole or spar for a lengthwise pull. This is in the class of slide and grip knots. It is not secure enough for climbing however.

Uses: Often used in sailing, its most common use is to rig simple tension capturing so that tension can be released on the other side to clear a jammed winch or block.

Advantages: useful knot that is easy to tie

Disadvantages: Can slip in modern synthetic ropes.
