Prof. Steinberg gives a brief introduction to the history of missiles and missile defense, and comments on the different circumstances that exist in the Middle East compared to the Cold War era.


Maj.-Gen. (res.) Yaakov Amidror (Program Director, Institute for Contemporary Affairs -- JCPA; former commander of the IDF National Defense College and IDF Staff and Command College)

In his presentation, Maj.-Gen. Amidror discusses the current missile threat. He focuses specifically on the threat coming from Lebanon and Hezbollah which began primarily in the 1980s, as well as Syria, Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Iran. Amidror discusses his stratum of missiles, ranging from the short and low strata (e.g. Kassam rockets used by groups like Hamas), the Katyusha rocket strata (more lethal than the short/low strata rockets and frequently used by Hamas), the medium strata (heavier and not as easily mobile as the Kassam or Katyusha rockets), and lastly the long range and heavy rocket strata (e.g. Scud rockets; Syria is a particular threat with its usage of chemical heads on their missiles).

Maj.-Gen. Amidror also discusses the difficulties the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has in responding to these different strata of threats and what considerations must be put in place, with an accurate analysis of the threat.
