Enslaved Black people in America resisted slavery in many secret and subtle ways. While some stories describe extreme actions like grinding glass into food, these are rare and often unverified. More common methods of resistance included working slowly or inefficiently, pretending to be sick, breaking tools, letting animals escape, stealing food or supplies, and setting fires. Slaves also preserved African cultural traditions through song, religion, language, and storytelling, which helped maintain their identity and sense of community. Some escaped slavery, either temporarily or permanently, and others helped organize escapes or revolts, such as those led by Nat Turner or Denmark Vesey. These acts of resistance allowed enslaved people to assert their humanity and fight back against the system in ways that were often hard for slaveholders to detect or punish.
