Gunnison has also been a significant educational center, being the first town on Colorado's western slope to have a college, the Colorado State Normal College, which later became Western Colorado University. The town's history is intertwined with the Native American tribes, particularly the Ute people, who were the original inhabitants of the area. The Ute people lived in Gunnison Valley during the summer for hunting and were known for their nomadic lifestyle. The Spanish began colonizing New Mexico in the 16th century and made their way into Ute territory, leading to the eventual removal of the Ute people by the US government in 1880.
