Yes, situations like these are happening across the country. Even with social distancing we all have directly or indirectly been affected by the virus. The Coronavirus pandemic has caused a tidal wave of requests from people wanting to get their wills and estate planning done.
Hi I’m Elsa W Smith. Your Maryland Estate Planning Attorney. Owner of the Law Offices of Elsa W. Smith. Our mission is to protect you, your family and your business. In this video, I’ll cover three points to consider as you start the estate planning process.
1. Estate Planning is NOT just for the wealthy.
Estate planning gets overlooked because people think it’s complicated. They think it’s about mansions, second homes, expensive cars, and yachts. Forget about that. Everything you’ve ever accumulated in your life is your estate, and having a plan to manage it – and even your life itself – is not only smart but often necessary.

2. Find an estate planning firm that already uses technology to meet with you, assess your particular needs, and can get you the documents that you need safely.

We can meet again via video to discuss edits. In the State of Maryland, remote witnessing and remote notarization are now permitted, but under certain conditions. You are encouraged to hire an estate planning attorney who is well versed in these very recent requirements so that your will and other documents are properly executed. You would not want to just download a document off of the internet and do things yourself only to find out that the documents are invalid.

3. Preparation and having a plan will reduce your anxiety.
Face tough end-of-life questions is one reason people put off this type of planning. Fear of making the wrong decision can lead to analysis paralysis. Translation. You’re overthinking it.
