The first important point is if someone has liver cirrhosis or liver disease in your home, you should stay in contact with a good hepatologist. This is very important as there are many points that we should take care of, and cirrhotic patients are generally sensitive and fragile. They need proper care both from family members and doctors.

Whenever liver cirrhosis is declared, always try to find out underlying reason for it. This is important because there are many causes for which medical treatment is available and you can stop or slow down the progression of liver disease and can delay the liver transplant.

To manage a cirrhotic patient, diet plays a very important role. Carbohydrates should be given in good amount because Glycogen content in cirrhotic liver is very low and liver does not provide good energy. Patient should take frequent meals. Patient should also consume good amount of proteins. Vegetable proteins like soya beans, lentils, chickpeas are absorbed better and are nutritionally superior to animal proteins. Fats should be consumed in moderate quantity. They should take low salt/sodium diet. Low salt diet helps in the management of leg swelling and ascites.

Immunization is very important, and all age-appropriate vaccines should be given. Cirrhotic patients are prone to infections and all possible steps should be taken to prevent infections. If any infection noted, then it should be treated aggressively. Patients should receive medications properly, whether the medicines are for their underlying cause or for complications like ascites, pedal edema and portal hypertension.
