Follow me today as I hike the Mountain Path to the summit of Ben Nevis. The highest peak in the United Kingdom in winter conditions.

Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in Scotland and the entire UK, standing at 1,345 meters (4,413 ft) near Fort William, known for challenging hikes, stunning Highland scenery, and its history as a volcano, attracting over 100,000 visitors annually for its popular Mountain Path (Pony Track) and demanding winter conditions.

The Ruins: At the very summit, you can still see the ruins of an observatory that was staffed full-time between 1883 and 1904. The meteorologists who lived there were known as the "Weathermen of the Ben."

The North Face: While the Mountain Path (Pony Track) is the most common route, the North Face features some of the highest and most difficult rock and ice climbs in the UK, featuring massive cliffs like the Carn Dearg Buttress.

The "Ben Nevis Race": Every September, hundreds of runners race from the town of Fort William to the summit and back. The record for the fastest ascent and descent is an incredible 1 hour and 25 minutes.

Safety First: Because the summit is often shrouded in clouds (roughly 355 days a year!), navigation can be extremely dangerous. The summit plateau is surrounded by sheer drops, requiring precise compass bearings to descend safely.

If you are standing at the Glen Nevis Visitor Centre right now, ensure you have:

Safety First: Because the summit is often shrouded in clouds (roughly 355 days a year!), navigation can be extremely dangerous. The summit plateau is surrounded by sheer drops, requiring precise compass bearings to descend safely.

Crampons & Ice Axe: These are non-negotiable today. The zig-zags will be banked with hard-packed snow and ice.

B2 or B3 Boots: Stiff-soled mountaineering boots are required to fit your crampons securely.

Navigation: A map and compass (and the knowledge to use them). Even in clear weather, the summit plateau is featureless and deadly if a "whiteout" rolls in.

Layers: No cotton. You should have a base layer, mid-fleece, a synthetic insulated "belay" jacket, and full waterproof hardshells.

Light: Sunset is at 3:41 PM. You will need a headlamp for the final descent.
