By seeding distrust in election systems, Republicans are already paving the way to “stop the steal” once again this November.

We spoke with Ari Berman, national voting rights correspondent with Mother Jones magazine, about MAGA’s multiple schemes to intimidate voters and election officials. One thing united the very divided Republican base is whipping up fear around “illegal immigrants” voting in the presidential election. Recently the House passed the SAVE Act, which would require physical proof of American citizenship to register to vote.

In reality, it’s already a federal crime for noncitizens to vote in federal elections and moreover noncitizen voting basically doesn’t happen. According to a study it made up about 0.0001 percent of the votes in 2016. These efforts to target this perceived threat just result in voter suppression of minority groups. For example, as Ari writes about, in 2019 Texas tried to kick 100,000 alleged noncitizens from the voter rolls. But the state quickly discovered that a sizable number of those booted, at least 25,000 of them, were naturalized US citizens.

Republicans are also making voter intimidation plans for November. In June, the RNC announced a plan to recruit 100,000 “election integrity” volunteers in an attempt to stop “Democrat attempts to circumvent the rules.” These volunteers would serve as threatening poll watchers and report back to the RNC to sow the seeds for election denial.
