Robin Soderling, the Swedish giant killer, has done it again.
The 23rd-seed, who upset top-seed and defending champ Rafael Nadal (rah-fay-ehl nah-DAHL'), has advanced to the semifinals with a straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 win over tenth-seed Nikolay Davydenko (NIH'-koh-ly dah-vee-DENK'-oh).
Soderling, who swept the first five games, says he never got over-confident as the match developed:
SOT:
It's always tough to win a first set, easy first set very quick, because you can never relax in the match on this level. I know he's gonna start playing better and straight from the first point in the second set he actually started to play much better. So, I always needed to tell myself to not lose concentration and to be on top of my game.
in the semifinals, Soderling who has advanced beyond the third round at a major for a first time, will face 12th-seed Fernando Gonzalez.
The Chilaen dispatched of third-seed Andy Murray, 6-3, 3-6, 6-love, 6-4.
Gonzalez finished with 24 forehand winners to three for Murray.
In women's play...top-seed Dinara Safina (din-NAH'-ruh sah-FEE'-nah) surivived a scare...as the Russian bounced back from a first-set loss to defeat Victoria Azarenka (ah-zah-REN'-kuh) of Belarus 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.
The win sends Safina to the semifinals in Paris...where she'll face Dominika Cibulkova (sy-bul-KOH'-va), who eliminated Maria Sharapova (shah-rah-POH'-vah) 6-0, 6-2.
The 20th-seeded Cibulkova says nobody should be surprised she knocked off the better known Russian:
SOT
I think more surprising for the people who don't know me and maybe for the crowd but uh today I was playing really solid. I was playing really solid from the baseline and I think I made really not a lot of un-forced errors and I was returning well and my serve was like so-so today. It was not the best, but I knew if I played solid and if I make her move and, uh, yah, if I play well than I have this chance.
As far as Sharapova's concerned...the ten day visit to Paris paid dividends.
This was her first major event since right shoulder surgery ten months ago..and after early round success...says she just could not keep up:
SOT
I guess you could only ask your body to do so much and you know everything felt a little short today. The pace wasn't there in my strokes was five steps slower today, I think everything kind of combines in the fact she play really solid and hit a lot of balls and I came up short today
Sharapova, a three-time Grand Slam champion, had 27 unforced errors to nine for Cibulkova, a Slovak who advanes to her first Grand Slam semifinal.
