The Earth’s temperature is steadily rising, large-scale pollution is going unchecked, seasonal changes have increased sharply, more animals are going extinct, and it’s becoming harder to access clean air and water.
One of the most dangerous consequences of climate change is the ice caps melting and water levels rising across the globe.
Human activities, notably since the industrial revolution, have caused greenhouse gas emissions, leading to rising temperatures, polar ice melt, and glacial retreat.
Scientists have calculated that if all the ice melts, it will increase the sea level by 67 metres or 220 feet. This would result in coastal towns and cities such as Mumbai, London, and New York, finding themselves underwater, displacing approximately 40% of the world’s population.
As oceans rise, saltwater seeps into underground water sources, polluting our drinking water and agricultural irrigation, and endangering our access to clean water.
Earth has more than five million cubic miles of ice, and some scientists say it would take more than 5,000 years to melt it all.
If we continue adding carbon to the atmosphere, we’ll very likely create an ice-free planet, with an average temperature of perhaps 27 degrees Celsius (80 degrees Fahrenheit) instead of the current 14 degrees (58 degrees F).
