Material fluxes can be strongly seasonal and have a substantial impact on ecological processes across ecosystem boundaries. In temperate climates, leaf fall is concentrated in autumn, yet leaf litter material is transported and decomposed across the whole year in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. This study highlights the phenology of key ecological processes and reveals the complex and sometimes asynchronous nature of material fluxes across the landscape.
