Paraphrases – Program Note

The work was commissioned by the “Land’s End ensemble” and was composed in the summer of 2010. It was premiered in Calgary, on the 17th of October of the same year, by the “Land’s End ensemble” under Joel Sachs. This was one of the first pieces I composed in Canada, to introduce myself to the Canadian audience, before my PhD studies in composition.

Working with familiar songs and melodic figures from Asia Minor, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, and former Yugoslavia, is a way of expressing my understanding of the mixture of various sound colours from the eastern Mediterranean. Related melodic motives are a kind of bridge between all these cultures and suggest a beginning of an exploration of their common character. This material belongs to a living tradition.
In this perception and exploration of folk music, the melodic element is used to stimulate memory, imagination, and creativity.
