Catherine and Curtis Jones are siblings who became known for a tragic and highly publicized case in the United States.
In 1999, when Catherine was 13 and Curtis was 12, they shot and killed their father's girlfriend, Sonya Nicole Speights (also referred to as Nicole Speights), in Port St. John, Florida. They used a stolen pistol. This made them the youngest individuals in U.S. history to be charged and tried as adults for first-degree murder.
The siblings reported a history of sexual abuse by a family member, and child welfare investigations had previously identified signs of abuse, but no significant action was taken at the time. Motivated by a desire to escape their abusive environment, they initially planned to kill multiple people (including their father and the abuser) but carried out the shooting of Speights.
They ultimately pleaded guilty to second-degree murder as part of a plea deal and were each sentenced to 18 years in prison, followed by lifetime probation.
Curtis Jones (born May 31, 1986) was released on July 28, 2015, at age 29. While in prison, he was ordained as a minister.
Catherine Jones was released on August 1, 2015, at age 30. She married a pen pal (a Navy officer named Ramous Fleming) while incarcerated in 2013, though that marriage later ended. Post-release, she has spoken about her experiences, become an advocate for juvenile justice reform (working with groups like the Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth), mentored others, and discussed how mentorship and addressing trauma helped her.
The case drew attention to issues like trying children as adults, failures in child protection systems, and the impact of abuse on young offenders. It has been covered in news articles, podcasts (e.g., Shades of Murder), and true crime discussions.
