On May 1, 1960, the Soviet Union successfully shot down an American U-2 spy plane over its territory. The aircraft, which had been designed to conduct reconnaissance missions at extremely high altitudes, was believed to be beyond the reach of Soviet air defenses. Piloted by Francis Gary Powers, the U-2 was gathering classified intelligence on Soviet military and nuclear facilities when it was struck by surface-to-air missiles and brought down. Powers survived the incident and was captured by Soviet forces.The United States government initially claimed that the aircraft was a weather research plane that had strayed off course, but the Soviet Union refuted this explanation by presenting the wreckage of the aircraft and the pilot’s confession. The incident triggered a serious diplomatic crisis between the two superpowers at the height of the Cold War and led to the cancellation of the Paris Summit.
